MVC Points vs. Marriott Bonvoy Points: What’s the Difference?

MVC Club Points pay for vacation ownership inventory; Marriott Bonvoy points belong to the hotel loyalty program. The names are similar, but the balances, booking rules, and value are not interchangeable.

Published August 29, 2026

Marriott Vacation Club and Marriott Bonvoy share a name and many properties, which makes it easy to assume their points work alike. They do not. One balance represents annual vacation ownership usage. The other is a loyalty balance earned through hotel activity, credit cards, and partners.

The distinction matters when you compare prices or rent an MVC villa from an owner. A quote based on 3,000 Club Points cannot be compared with a 300,000-point Bonvoy award by looking at the number of points alone. Each price comes from a different inventory system and a different set of rules.

What MVC Club Points are

Club Points are part of a vacation ownership interest. An owner receives an allotment for a Use Year and spends those points on reservations available through the club. The points required depend on the resort, season, villa size, view category, check-in day, and length of stay.

They behave more like an annual reservation budget than a rebate earned from travel. Unused points remain subject to use-year and banking rules. Marriott's current banking table gives different deadlines and periods of use by Owner benefit level, and banked points generally cannot be banked again or transferred to another owner.

Club Points also carry an ongoing cost. Owners pay annual maintenance dues regardless of whether they make a reservation. That is why an owner with points approaching a deadline may rent a stay for less than Marriott's published hotel rate: recovering part of the dues can be better than letting the points expire.

What Marriott Bonvoy points are

Bonvoy points belong to Marriott's hotel loyalty program. Members earn them from qualifying hotel charges and may also earn them through co-branded cards, promotions, and travel partners. They can be redeemed for award nights and other options offered through the loyalty program.

A Bonvoy balance is not tied to vacation ownership, annual maintenance dues, or an MVC Use Year. Award prices and availability are controlled by the Bonvoy reservation system. Owning 200,000 Bonvoy points does not give a traveler access to the owner inventory that appears in an MVC account.

Can Bonvoy points book an MVC resort?

A Marriott Vacation Club property may appear on Marriott.com with a cash rate or Bonvoy award rate. When it does, you are booking hotel inventory through Marriott Bonvoy. That is different from the vacation ownership inventory an MVC owner sees, even if the resort name and villa description look identical.

The practical consequence is that one channel can show availability while the other does not. The channels may also offer different villa categories, cancellation rules, and prices. Compare the exact resort, dates, room type, view, taxes, and fees rather than assuming the two listings represent the same reservation.

Can MVC Club Points become Bonvoy points?

Marriott offers an exchange into Bonvoy for some eligible ownership interests. It is not a universal transfer button. The amount an owner may exchange, the election deadline, applicable fees, and eligibility depend on the ownership and the rules in effect for that Use Year.

Conversion also does not make the currencies equivalent. Once exchanged, the owner has Bonvoy points governed by Bonvoy redemption rules, not Club Points that can still reserve MVC owner inventory. Before converting, an owner should compare the hotel award they can actually book with the villa stay or rental value they would give up.

What happens when you rent from an MVC owner

A traveler renting an MVC stay does not receive points of either kind. The owner spends their Club Points in the MVC system, makes a specific reservation, and names the traveler as the arriving guest. The traveler is buying the confirmed stay, not a transferable points balance.

This is also why the reservation should be evaluated on its cash total. Use the MVC points calculator to estimate how many Club Points a stay requires, then compare the resulting owner quote with Marriott's cash price and any Bonvoy award available for the same dates. A lower points count is not automatically a better deal when the currencies differ.

Will an owner-booked stay earn Bonvoy credit?

Do not build the value of an owner rental around Bonvoy points or Elite Night Credits. Marriott lists stays fulfilled through a vacation ownership interest among non-qualifying stay types. A Bonvoy award night is treated differently because it is an award redemption made through the loyalty program.

You can still add a Bonvoy number to some reservations or provide it at the resort, but that does not turn the room into a qualifying paid stay. Eligibility for points on dining or other on-property charges depends on the property and the type of charge. Ask Marriott or the resort about the specific reservation if loyalty credit affects your decision.

How to compare your options

Start with the stay, not the points balance. Price the exact dates and villa through every channel available to you. Include booking fees, taxes, resort charges, cancellation terms, and the value of any Bonvoy points or elite credit you can confirm.

A Bonvoy award may be attractive when hotel award inventory is available and you already have the points. An owner rental may be stronger when MVC has the villa or dates you want, or when its cash price is well below the alternatives. Booking Marriott's cash rate can still be the sensible choice when flexibility, loyalty earnings, or direct hotel terms matter more than the price difference.

Frequently asked

Are MVC Points the same as Marriott Bonvoy points?

No. MVC Club Points are tied to vacation ownership and reserve inventory within the vacation-club system. Bonvoy points are hotel loyalty rewards earned through qualifying stays, cards, and partners. The balances live in separate accounts and follow separate rules.

Can I use Marriott Bonvoy points to book a Marriott Vacation Club resort?

Sometimes a vacation-club property offers hotel rooms or villas through Marriott.com, including Bonvoy award inventory. That availability is separate from the owner inventory reserved with MVC Club Points, so the dates, room types, and points required may differ.

Can an MVC owner convert Club Points to Bonvoy points?

Some eligible owners can exchange qualifying Club Points or ownership usage for Bonvoy points. Limits, deadlines, fees, and eligibility depend on the ownership and current program rules. The exchange is one-way and should be compared with the value of using or renting the Club Points.

Will I earn Bonvoy points or Elite Night Credits on an MVC owner reservation?

Do not assume that you will. Marriott classifies stays fulfilled through a vacation ownership interest differently from qualifying paid hotel rates. Ask Marriott about the specific reservation and treat any eligible on-property spending separately from the room stay.

Do I need MVC Points to rent a villa from an owner?

No. The owner uses their Club Points to make the reservation and adds you as the arriving guest. You pay for the confirmed stay; you do not buy, receive, or manage the owner's points.
